Published in 1552, only 60 years after the discovery of America, this is considered to be the first map ever published of the West Indies. The french text below, continued on the verso, describes Columbus' voyage to the West Indies in 1492. Several unnamed islands shown, embellished with cities, sailing ships and sea monsters. A wonderful image of idyllic islands, seen by Europeans during a prolific time for communications through the printing process and a keen interest in the New World. On page with text. Nice dark image on clean paper. Published in Basle, by Sebastian Munster. Map measures 4" x 5 3/4" on page measuring 12 1/4" x 8 1/4".
THIS IS NOT A REPRODUCTION! All of our items are genuine antiques as described.
